Release Notes:

The 2005 Sounds of the Underground festival tour was about as decidedly
“un-funky” as they come. Equally put off by the lack of anything remotely “in a
pocket”, Per Wiberg of Opeth and Jean-Paul Gaster of Clutch set up shop outside
the bus trailers and sent an open invitation to any like-minded musicians.
Shortly thereafter, they commenced to fill the void. All told, this happed only
a few times, but when it did, great spontaneous jams were pulled from the
aether. They were a sorely needed respite from days crammed full with blast
beats and monster howls. The good times, however, would inevitably come to a
halt when a participant would insist upon “shredding” or “wailing”. This was not
the spirit of said jams. The credo was “get funky or get out”.

Seeking to further reap the rewards only found in that spontaneity, Wiberg
gathered a group of friends in a rented house in Falun, Sweden. It was somewhat
of a leap of faith in that the session would rely primarily on the collective
writing and recording of one week’s time. But considering whom Per had
assembled, there was plenty of reason to be confident. Thomas Juneor Andersson
(Kamchatka) on guitar and vocals, Ulf Rockis Ivarsson (Beat Under Control,
countless sessions), Eric Oblander (Five Horse Johnson) harp on “Leaving Letter
Blues”, Tomas Agnas on sax for “Mr. Clean”, Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch, The
Bakerton Group) on drums, and finally Wiberg on vocals, keys, and guitar.

Prior to the session, Wiberg sketched out a few ideas and Andersson had hummed a
tune to him over the phone. But other than that, the session was an honest blank
slate. It was recorded together live as a whole by Roberth Ekholm. This was not
an easy task. The studio was wired into a rented vacation home populated by
musicians who love beer in equal measure to music. When all was said and done,
the group banged out a full-length album of merciless blues, funk, and rock and
roll. Two covers made the cut, “Running”, written by Curtis Mayfield, and a
stellar Freddie Hubbard version of Weldon Irvine’s classic “Mr. Clean”. The
album documents one week in Sweden when a small gathering traveling musicians
threw their ingredients into the collective cauldron, enjoyed the meal, and then
departed as quickly as they had come. For this reason, they call the group, and
its debut release, King Hobo.

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is the sixth studio album by the Foo Fighters, released on September 25, 2007.

The album debuted at the top of the UK album chart, selling 135,685 albums in its first week. The album also went platinum in its first week in both Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S., it entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #3, selling 168,668 copies in its first week, and has since been certified gold. As of September 4th, 2008, it has sold 792,612 copies in US.

The album was the band’s fourth to have a song reach the top of the Modern Rock Tracks, with “The Pretender”, as well as “Long Road to Ruin” and “Let It Die”. With 18 weeks at the summit, “The Pretender” also set the record for longest stretch at #1 on Billboard’s Alternative / Modern Rock chart. With “Long Road to Ruin” (7 weeks at #1) and “Let It Die” (4 weeks at #1), the album has a total of 29 weeks atop the chart, making it the most successful album on the chart since Linkin Park’s Meteora. Also with “Let It Die”, it is the group’s first album to spawn 3 Number One hits from the same album on the Modern Rock Tracks charts, it is only the ninth album in history to spawn 3 number 1 hits on this chart.

The album won the 2008 Grammy for Best Rock Album and “The Pretender” won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The album was also nominated for Album of the Year, while “The Pretender” was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rock Song. The band had previously won Best Rock Album Grammys for There Is Nothing Left to Lose and One by One. The album also won Best International Album at the 2008 Brit Awards.

Throughout their nine-year career, Nickelback have stayed true to their roots, releasing five CDs of straight-up, unapologetic rock & roll. So how have things changed for the Canadian boys since the massive success of Silver Side Up and The Long Road? Well, brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger still live in the Great White North, and they still write hook-laden rock songs. The only difference now is that they have the satisfaction, 10 million CDs later, of smugly knowing that even some of their biggest naysayers will guiltily admit to singing along with Nickelback’s catchy hits. On All the Right Reasons, one track definitely ranks high up in hum-ability: the first single, “Photograph,” reminisces about the bittersweetness of high school in a small town–once again reconfirming frontman Chad Kroeger’s ability to write memorable hooks. Regarding the rest of the disc: standard rock topics like love, lust, jealousy, and breakups abound, with riff-y delivery that longtime fans will love. The guilty pleasure bunch will also find what they need within the grooves, on the ballad “If Everyone Cared,” the riff-heavy “Fight for All the Wrong Reasons,” and the Metallica-inspired “Savin’ Me.” The disc’s most impressive and simultaneously surreal moment, however, exists on “Side of a Bullet,” a passionate revenge tale written about the killer of Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, which features one of the late Abbott’s guitar solos as donated by Pantera bandmate and brother, drummer Vinnie Paul. –Denise Sheppard
